[Volunteer] I participated in the monthly Jazz Spot at Jozenji Temple!!
On Monday, October 21st, some volunteer members performed at the Jozenji Monthly Jazz Spot.
This time, the member report will be written by Kikuta Ayuka, 10th term violinist.
The participants this time were 6 people in total, including 5 musicians and Fukuzumi-kun, who took part in the talk. For the two 10th-year students, this was their first performance as part of the Tohoku Youth Orchestra.
The venue, Sendai Mediatheque, was a beautiful building with distinctive glass walls.
About a week before the performance, we held a rehearsal in Sendai with the professional musicians with whom we will be performing.
After that, we practiced a few times and finally arrived at the day of the performance.
Firstly, we started with a sound check rehearsal!
The rehearsal progressed with full-scale stage equipment, including lighting and speakers, with detailed adjustments being made.
By the time the rehearsal ended, the audience was already there, even though it was only an hour and a half before the show started.
And finally, the performance began! We formed a circle with the professionals who would be performing with us!
The chant is "T.Y.O." I hope to continue forming a circle like this in the future.
The professionals performed three pieces, including jazz arrangements of classical music such as "Turkish March." All of the performances were really cool and wonderful.
And then it was time for the Tohoku Youth Orchestra to take to the stage.
Fukusumi introduced each member and then the first song they played began.
The first song they played was "Aqua."
This song has become a standard for the Tohoku Youth Orchestra, but the quartet's performance was made even more moving by the addition of beautiful harmonies on the piano and excitement from the drums.
After a promotional segment for the Tohoku Youth Orchestra,
the second song they performed was "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence."
From this song onwards, the saxophone joined in the performance. The jazz sound and the beautiful worldview of this song matched well, and we enjoyed the harmony as we performed.
Finally, we played "Behind the Mask."
The up-tempo melody was joined by the audience's clapping, and we had a really fun performance!
After the show, all the performers took a photo together!
They were all really kind and enthusiastic about the show and did the "girl peace" gesture.
It was the first time for all of us members to perform in a jazz session, but the different feel and harmonies from classical music were very stimulating.
And above all, we had a lot of fun playing.
We hope to also perform in other parts of Miyagi, so that people can become more aware of TYO's activities.
Thank you for reading until the end!
