The 9th term kicked off!

On Sunday, July 2nd, the kickoff for the 9th term and the first joint training session were held at the Fukushima City Western Workers' Training Center.

First, Secretary General Hirokazu Tanaka spoke about the Tohoku Youth Orchestra's current and future plans.

The 9th regular concert (March 2012) will be a memorial concert for director Ryuichi Sakamoto, and will feature performances of his works.

Now that Director Sakamoto has passed away, I spoke about how in order to continue TYO in the future, it is important for each member to further increase their initiative.

Masato Oshigi of Yamaha Corporation, who is also the representative director of the Tohoku Youth Orchestra General Incorporated Association, also rushed to the event.

He spoke about his experiences, including the launch of the Children's Music Revitalization Fund, the predecessor of the Tohoku Youth Orchestra.

We also heard from conductor Toshio Yanagisawa.
The 9th concert will be a Ryuichi Sakamoto program, and Director Sakamoto mentioned that in his works the movements of each individual part are even more important.

The representative member of the Tohoku Youth Orchestra is called the "captain" rather than the "director," and he is in charge of coordinating the group.

The previous captain, Ayaka Kikuchi, introduced the next captain.

This season, he will be the first male captain of Tohoku Youth.
This is Kaizu Kota, who plays the trombone section.

Kaizu-kun is well known for drawing caricatures of Yanagasawa-san, the administrative staff, and the orchestra members on a whiteboard during the training camp just before the concert every year.

Captain, thank you!

The new members from the 9th term also introduced themselves. This term, 11 new members joined, focusing on parts that were lacking.

In addition, as this concert is a memorial performance for Director Sakamoto, former members of the group who wish to do so will also be able to take part in the performance.

As an administrative staff member, I am also happy to be able to meet old friends again.

After the morning kick-off meeting, we split into parts and introduced ourselves over lunch.

On that day, the Fukushima Minpo newspaper came to cover the event, and we took a group photo for this season.

In the afternoon, practice for the concert began.

It's been a while since I last practiced Ryuichi Sakamoto's "ETUDE," "The Last Emperor," and "Now Time Tilts."

The man in the picture behind Yanagisawa is the cameraman for the movie. This season, NHK will be doing an in-depth interview with Tohoku Youth.

In fact, former clarinetist and alumnus Momoka Kikuchi is planning the show as the director. I'm very pleased to see the growth of our graduates.

---On the wall of the practice room, there were flyers advertising concerts in which members of the troupe would be performing.

This is an announcement for a concert by Tajima, who was captain of the horn section from the 5th to 7th terms.

Apparently it is a horn ensemble made up of classmates from Tokyo University of the Arts.
It's a very short notice introduction, but if you're interested, be sure to check it out!
